At a meeting of the New York Academy of Sciences the year this stone was discovered, famed gemologist George Frederick Kunz proposed naming this jewel in honor of his friend and customer J.P. Morgan. After all, Morgan, the man renowned as America’s greatest banker, was an avid gem collector who gave many important donations to museums.
