One design in particular would become the period’s icon and remain popular to this day: invisibly set jewelry. It originated from the jeweler’s desire to show only gemstones, hiding the precious metal mountings.
The invisible setting was an immediate success and for two decades sold with abandon. But with the changing tastes and designs of the ’50s, invisibly set jewelry all but disappeared—until the 1980s and ’90s, when the style enjoyed a triumphant comeback.
Today, invisible settings have once again taken the jewelry world by storm thanks to advancements in manufacturing; however the technique still requires enormous skill that has been mastered by very few jewelers. Each gem has to be not only grooved but also faceted precisely to fit snugly against another for their unique position in the design motif.
