Using a technique first mastered in the ancient city, swords made from Damascus steel were known to slice gun barrels in half and separate single strands of hair in two, even if the hair simply floated down onto the blade. The secretive, ancient production technique mixed different steel alloys to form a super steel, creating a rippled, wavy texture, which came to identify the steel’s origin.
