If you travel alone, it’s bound to happen: I fell for a woman 4,000 miles from home. The place was Madrid. I was young and had just returned from Pamplona’s running of the bulls, and one brute had gotten close enough to leave a rip in my shirt and a nasty bruise on my side. Still wearing my red festival scarf and dusty white duds, I decided to celebrate my brush with death at a local flamenco bar. She was dancing that night, and on her break, came over to ask about my battle scars.
The rest is history. We had an amazing summer, and when it was time for me to return to the states, she gifted me a pale blue scarf. “Celeste,” she said. “The color of the sky. So every time you look up, you’ll think of me.” Fortunately, I still had time before my flight to stop into a jewelry shop. I knew just what I was looking for: a sky-blue topaz ring and earring set.
