Our chief watch designer stated he would like to design a very unique watch. He suggested a large number of our clientele were “men of the world” and should have a timepiece that reflected as much. He then unveiled drawings that put the world on a watch. We not only felt that it was impossible to manufacture, we thought he was nuts. He certainly fooled us!
First he came up with a very clever concave case, to facilitate the depiction of the earth’s surface. Then he styled a convex scratch-resistant crystal to provide clarity and magnification of the interior globe. Finally for the merest touch of “universal” whimsy, he added a red and blue tipped hour and minute hand and a gold star second hand. The movement is hand-crafted, with 23 jewels and with an amazing mini rotor so that the classic automatic movement will never require batteries. The exhibition back reveals this genius of engineering. The case is solid stainless steel and layered with 14k gold, and of course the black leather strap boasts handsome alligator embossing. Clearly, the DuMonde is a watch of the world, for a man of the world.
