Call me naïve. Years ago, when I was young, broke and still had lots to learn about fashion, I spent three months working as a dishwasher in Paris. Everywhere I looked that summer — adorning the heads, necks, waists and wrists of the most stylish Parisian women — were beautiful lightweight scarves. One evening over drinks I asked my companion where I could buy some as souvenirs for my sisters back home. She laughed and informed me that those scarves sold for hundreds of dollars apiece! Let’s just say my sisters enjoyed their French chocolates.
Today those scarves are as popular as ever, and their prices have only gone up. It’s not unusual to see one selling for $700 or more. And while I could afford them now, it would go against my personal philosophy: Don’t pay extra for a big-name designer upcharge.
Fortunately, you don’t have to. We knew we could find gorgeous, timeless scarves for less, and we did, by hopping a train from Milan to Lake Como, Italy. There, alongside the villas and celebrity retreats, we found scarves so effortlessly chic, we knew they had to be yours.
Choose from four intricate designs — the Equestrian, the Rococo, the Catenina and the Florentine — and indulge in the smart, upscale look beloved by fashionable women the world over. The best part? With all the money you’ll save, you can even fly to Paris to show them off!
