As millennia passed, two species of ammonites slowly transformed into stunningly-colored fossils called ammolite.
Ammolite has a dazzling range of colors and patterns. Evocative names describe its diversity of appearance from cobblestone and stained glass to dragon skin and paint brush. Ammolite is found in only one region of the world –– the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada. The International Gem Society estimates that only about 5% of the ammonites found in Alberta have suitable gem material on the shell surface.
