Handcrafted sterling silver inlaid with 10,000-year old fossilized Woolly Mammoth bone

While the last mammoth died out more than 10,000 years ago, recently jewelry designers have gravitated towards mammoth fossils to create incred-ibly unique designs. From its teeth to its bones, woolly mammoths provide artisans with plenty of storied materials to work with.

The main source of mammoth fossils is Siberia, where the fossils have been preserved under the permafrost. As a result of global warming and the melting of the permafrost, they are becoming easier and easier to unearth. Unlike elephant tusks, mammoth is fossilized and tends to be brownish or blueish from centuries of absorbing minerals in the ground. Skilled jewelry artisans have made these Paleolithic artifacts into beautiful statement jew-elry pieces.

This ring was made in Santa Fe, New Mexico by our friend G L Miller. The recipient of national and international design awards, GL’s passion for the Southwest culture and history has fine-tuned his imaginative jewelry creations. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and will vary slightly.
