Though sculptor Adolph Weinman insisted it was meant to represent Lady Liberty, popular opinion held that it resembled Mercury, the Greek god of commerce. In any case, it’s believed that Weinmann based the image on a bust he had made of his neighbor Elsie Stevens, the wife of poet Wallace Stevens. But no one knows for sure.
