When I was a much younger lad, I spent a few months backpacking through Australia. It’s a gorgeous country filled with natural wonders and a laid-back culture. Their “no worries, mate,” attitude is something I try to emulate in times of trouble.
A prime example of this ethos revealed itself during a 24-hour backpacker bus ride to Broome. For the uninitiated, a backpacker bus is an inexpensive way to get around; just hop on or off wherever you need, no frills.
Our driver was an unflappable, sun-weathered Aussie named Oliver. Halfway through our day-long journey, the bus suddenly jerked and we heard a thwapping noise coming from our hood. With the temperature ticking over 100 degrees and no other cars in sight, I must admit that I thought we might be in trouble.
Oliver’s diagnosis was swift: serpentine belt. Ever capable, he took out a unique double-bladed knife and used it to pry the engine’s pulleys apart and replace the belt with a spare. When I finally got to Broome, I immediately went out in search of a knife just like Oliver’s.
