I was at the rare gemstone show in Tucson, perusing table after table of glittering baubles, when a certain white sparkler caught my eye. It had the clarity and color of a diamond but possessed a fiery depth I’d only seen in an emerald. “What is this?” I asked the jeweler. He gave me a wink and said, “It’s white beryl, but us folks in the business call it a ‘white emerald.’”
Having been in the gem business, I knew emerald’s scientific name was beryl, but in more that four decades of searching the globe for rare gems, I’d never seen a white emerald. Immediately, I knew it was my lucky day and that I’d found something extraordinarily special.
