It looked like the lizard was wearing a leather jacket. On my trip through the Yucatán some years back, an archaeologist friend was showing me his latest find: a Mayan temple that hadn’t been disturbed for millennia. As we journeyed through the limestone ruins, flashlights in hand, my friend could barely contain his excitement.
Entering the temple’s main chamber, a brightly colored iguana with a black band around his upper torso caught my eye. Enchanted by the little guy, I chased after him and nearly met a ruin of my own making. Rounding a corner, I stopped myself just in time to avoid plunging through a hole in the floor.
It was then that I noticed something shiny reflecting off my watch’s face. Pointing my flashlight upwards, it was my turn to be excited. Though obscured by centuries of overgrowth, the entire ceiling was covered in Mayan gold. Ever since, the watch has been a good luck charm on all my travels.
